Why one off SEO is damaging your business

As an SEO consultant, I’ve honestly heard it all before when it comes to investing in SEO. Maybe your website can just tick along, and maybe someone somewhere will find you. Maybe you should invest in SEO, but it just all seems a bit overwhelming. Whichever excuse is holding you back, I’ve probably had the conversation already.

So, you’ve made the move and finally decided to get your website SEO sorted out, and decided to just invest in one-off SEO optimisation, because well, SEO does’’t really do much, does it? It can’t be that hard and it can’t take that much time.

Well, here’s a little truth bomb. No, SEO isn’t that hard. But what is hard, is doing it well and getting results. There’s an awful lot of companies out there who claim to do the above but leave their clients feeling let down and not willing to trust another SEO consultant.

When it comes to SEO, a lot of clients just want a one-off SEO shot. They want someone to sort out their website, fix any issues and get them seen on Google. This is what we call one-off SEO optimisation. And it kinda kills your website.

Let me explain.

Imagine your website is your car. When you buy your car, the garage makes sure it’s all running nicely and everything works. You drive off, and a year later it’s time for an MOT and service. You pass the MOT, but some minor issues have been flagged, but you decided to ignore that, as it’s just minor stuff, and you don’t really want to spend any more money. A few months later, that minor issue you didn’t fix, becomes a major issue. And that major issue now costs a whole lot more than the minor issue did. Worst part: your car no longer works. Your car no longer works, and you’ve got a whopping great bill rather than a little one.

SEO is the same. Sure, a one-off SEO boost is going to make your website all shiny and probably find-able. Till Goggle releases one of it’s many, many updates and everything goes kaput. Or your website is no longer mobile-friendly, or that WordPress plugin is no longer supported, or your keywords have changed and no one is searching for you anymore; your website spirals down through ranking, landing you on page 1000 and a massive loss in sales and business.

Well damn, if only you’d invested in that ongoing SEO, and kept your website finely tuned and up to date, eh?
