How to create the perfect homepage

Building a homepage is pretty simple, right? You pop on some images, some text about who you are and what you do and then a contact form, or maybe a shop button. And hey-pesto, you’ve got a brilliant frontpage for your business.

But something is going wrong. Sales aren’t really happening, and that contact form isn’t being filled out. So what’s going on?

Firstly, login to your Google Analytics account and pinpoint where clients are dropping off. Is it the homepage? Or is it further in?

If you have a high bounce-rate on your homepage, then something is amiss, but it's easily solvable.

Let’s take a look at how to make the perfect homepage.

  • Imagery An image speaks a thousand words and all that? Make sure your images are spot on and invest in good quality product photography if you are an online shop. Don’t under invest here, good photography is a must. Not selling a product, but a service? You still need images, check out Unsplash for royalty-free stock.

  • What do your customers need? These are the main frustrations that your clients have, and how you fix them.

  • All about you This where you sell yourself and all your epic experience and knowledge.

  • What they get Make this clear and concise - bullet points/boxes, whichever gets the message across clearly.

  • Testimonials Ask past clients to write awesome things about you and add them to your homepage.

  • CTA Make sure you pepper call to actions throughout your homepage: shop now, contact, find out more or sign up buttons.

  • Clear strapline Use the above information to write a compelling strapline for the top of your website. You have less than three seconds to capture clients attention, so don’t waste it.
